Like every fashion obsessed teenager growing up during the late 80’s and early 90’s, I loved the Original Supermodels.
Whenever Claudia, Christy, Cindy, Naomi, Helena or Linda graced the TV screen, I stopped whatever I was doing just to watch them work that runway…
But where are they now?
What happened to haute couture’s original Girl Gang?
- Claudia Schiffer
Claudia was only 17 when Karl Lagerfeld fell in love with her and mused her up, asking her to model for Chanel.
That infamous Guess campaign which played up her resemblance to Brigit Bardot sealed her fate and transformed her into an international superstar.
Short answer-Married with three kids…
Ok I’ll elaborate! This German born model is now married to filmmaker Matthew Vaughn and has recently celebrated the birth of her third child.
After forming a joint venture with the German knitwear brand Iris Von Arnim, Claudia has designed a capsule collection of easy and stylish throw them on clothes, the kind of cashmere pieces that she would pull on in the morning to take her children to school.
- Christy Turlington
Simply known as Turly, she has been the face of Valentino, Chanel, Revlon, Maybelline and Calvin Klein.
From fashion icon to activist, Christy Turlington has successfully created a diverse and multi-talented career as an entrepreneur, role model and spokesperson in the cosmetic, fashion, business and political spheres.
Today she is an advocate for wellness and international aid, supporting women’s health projects and relief work across the globe.
Additionally, Turlington is widely recognised as a prominent voice for yoga and a healthier way of life.
Christy’s long term interest in yoga has culminated in the creation of two successful businesses – Nuala and Sundari, an Ayurvedic skincare line – as well as the best selling book Living Yoga.
Most recently she co-starred with models Karen Elson and Natalia Vodianova in Louis Vuitton’s beautiful 1950’s inspired, Fall 2010 ad campaign.
Oh and did I mention that she also found time to get married to the actor director Ed Burns and have two children with him ? Busy bee…
- Cindy Crawford
Known for that trademark mole just above her lip, Cindy was always considered the athletic one.
I loved watching her as the host of the MTV series House of Style.
I even supported her by buying her Shape your Body DVD, thinking that I too could have her figure…
After a year of trying I burned the damn thing in protest.
She married the actor Richard Gere and after some speculation at the state of their marriage, she divorced him four years later.
As an entrepreneur Cindy has launched several businesses including a line of anti-ageing skincare products.
She is also busy expanding her hugely successful Cindy Crawford Home collection, which grosses over $250m annually in retail sales and includes accessories and furniture.
She is married to businessman Rande Gerber and has two children.
- Naomi Campbell
Having a gazelle like demeanor Naomi is up there as one of my favourites.
Her presence on the haute couture runway and on the cover of haute couture glossies heralded a major breakthrough in fashion, giving African American models more exposure.
This exposure made a statement to the world and showcased African American beauty as it should be, on par with the European aesthetic.
She battled with the racism that is so flagrantly omnipresent in fashion and paved the way for the Jourdan Dunn’s and Tyra Banks’s of this world.
Discovered at 15 in London’s Covent Garden, she graced all of the catwalks representing Versace, Nars, Ralph Lauren and Prada.
She also appeared in music videos for George Michael and Michael Jackson.
Dolce and Gabanna celebrated the 25th anniversary of her career in 2010 with a party and limited edition T-shirts, proceeds of which were donated to her charity Fashion For Relief.
A former Miss Denmark, she went on to sign lucrative contracts with Cover Girl and Victoria Secret.
After nearly two decades on the runway, it seems as though Helena has found her vocation as a photographer.
She also co-founded Nylon magazine and has co designed a line of jewellery.
She has one son.
Linda is the Canadian born chameleon who famously told a reporter in 1990 that She and her supermodel friends didn’t wake up for less than $10 000.
Having worked steadily for the last 20 years, her recent gigs include ad campaigns for Prada and Galliano. Linda has one son.
To round off this post have a look at George Michael’s Freedom video which shows exactly why these beauties were called Super Models…
